Yeah, but he can afford going to the BIG studios to finish his mixes...

Anyways: if you're listening to music mainly through your phone speaker (STOP THAT BS KID), well you wouldn't be here I guess ;)

Learn your speakers and room, then you will be eventually able to produce mixes that translate well.

Though Sonarworks- alike software can help it won't do the work for you.

I've learned the sound of this loud ass freeway I produce next to, super well.

I don't know man. It doesn't sound like he's killing it. He just makes music 24/7 for himself and lets other folks handle the business, almost at random. Like whatever happens happens, release or no release. But he did start his own label, at least.

I haven't looked into it, but I'd guess they just send it out for a vinyl master before they press the records.

Also the new Stones Throw studio actually looks pretty small and cozy.

Edit: Obviously, labels with a big audience can cover the studio time. You're right in that sense.

Yes. There is s typo at very start of my statement. . If read further I say listen thru headphones or speakers. Meant hope peeps didn't just listen thru a phone as I did first time I casually listened. But when voting I listened again thru headphones. Excuse any confusion.. but as I said it corrects itself if you read past that 1st typo. Per Du hit the nail on the head and said it much better than I did.. defer to his statement on the topic. (& Joa you're totally right about the rush. It is nice to go back and listen again once the heat is off)

NOTE- In my defense, lol, I would have fixed but Joa had already reposted it.  (just messing w ya Joa. Lol :D )

Jeez. 3rd time I've corrected this post. Sorry for confusion. Terrible at quoting others ... arg!

I did most of my work this year with dt880s. They're clear in the sub and all the way up. They're light, they let your ears breathe, it's all good. The dynamic range is wide as hell, to the point of ear fatiguing. Plus spikey highs.

Not sure yet if I'd take dt880s over k240s, but definitely not over m40x, if you open them up once in a while.

M50x are even more mid-scooped, which is why I think of those as what you give artists and listeners rather than producers. Still, some of the best sound designers I know use mostly m50x.
I used DT880's for a few years after years of using DT770's for many years, but the more openness and space of the 880's was at the expense of low end, which the 770's had. (Fundamental closed open back vs closed back issue) I used the akg K702's for a short time as well, and while the space was great, I just couldn't vibe with how they sounded in the upper mid range. Overall they sounded too brittle IMO.

I found the perfect balance when I got DT1770's last year. For me they combined the best of the DT880 and DT770 headphones plus lots more and make producing or listening an absolute joy! 8-)

(Add a SubPac S2 and a SPL Phonitor Mini headphone amp into the equation and it's dreamland. )
those DT1770's sound interesting..
I use the 770's for recording vocals, as they are closed..
and have M Audio BX 5 monitors..
I like to produce on them till the last phase and then switch to headphones for checking details and panning etc.
better for the ol' ears.

so you like the m40x over the akg?
Yeah.
Still, hip hop heads referenced with k240s for a ton of hits. And k240s were in studios for decades before hip hop.

AFAIK the even bigger one is the sony mdr7506.

Now people compare the 7506 and the m40x.

After reading all the hype and the tests, what finally sold me on the m40x were the Sonic Sense Pro Audio recordings where you can hear the sound of the headphones through their mics.

Obviously soundcloud is pretty lofi at 128 kbps mp3
Edit: WTF they might have lowered it to 64 kbps opus

Skip to 1:45 in this vid and you'll hear how crazy this is.

I mean "hip hop" has a lot of meanings nowadays. Hell, the billboard top 100 is full of "hip hop."
True, k240s were made in '75 and Rapper's Delight came out in '79,
But what I'm saying is most of the stuff I hear around here is mid 90s influenced.
Also I lived in nyc in the 90s, when it was covered in art, and that's what I think of.

interesting audio comparison. the m40x sound great. I'm familiar with the k240s and know their history in professional settings. fat von uses them too. I've owned them and the 7506 in the past. I've used beyerdynamics at some point too. I want those m40x. sennheiser 280 are solid too.

yeah that pic of Saadyah he's got those hd280s, and he has clean mixes. hd280s seem mid heavy, so if it sounds good on 280s you're probably alright.

I get this vibe like hd280s are like yamaha monitors, the audio technicas and beyerdynamics are more like krks and genelics.
That doesn't 100% make sense though.

Yeah you should be able to move all the headphone posts to a new thread in the producer forum, as it's all useful stuff so best collate it where it should be. :)

Headphone Chat

Sun Dec 30, 2018 7:20 pm

As requested, I moved the headphone chat into this thread. I'm a bit of a headphone nerd, so I'm happy to see some discussion on this topic!! :)

Went to CANJAM in LA last year, it's a fun show if you are super into this stuff!

When I got out of vinyl (for the most part lol) about 3-4 years ago I spent some money on a high quality digital setup now.

My home setup: Oppo PM1 connected to Fostex HP-A4 BL (Balanced cable)

My portable setup: Oppo PM3 when wanting a wired pair (These are pretty neutral, so should be really good to mix audio with!!!) and I'm now on the Bang & Olufsen H7 for Bluetooth set. It took me a long time to find the 'perfect' bluetooth headphones, I can't deal with noise cancelling so the H7s are really nice (If you can find them around $200 like I did).

My headphone story went like: Sennheiser HD202 - Sennheiser HD 280 - Sennheiser HD 555 - Audio Technica M50s - Sennheiser HD 598 - Oppo PM1/PM3

For anyone who just connects their headphones to jack on laptop or computer, I'm telling you even spending $50-100 on a dac/amp is worth the money!!! The Fiio E10K is what opened my ears to this -- A great place to start

For budget stuff, the Sennheiser 598s are not only INSANELY comfortable (I would often fall asleep with them on lol) but they also sound great for the price. Highly recommend those with the Fiio E10K :)

Unboxing the Oppo PM-1s is a fun experience, some dude took a video of this lol

could have sworn I spotted you wearing them on the scratch mag hangouts. guess my old "cx eagle eyes" need to be checked....

I listened to the headphone comparison on MacBook speakers so it means absolutely nothing. hard to go by those anyway. best to try them on yourself

All speakers lie, including mics.

First time I heard that demo was on my old stereo which only hits 12k. It has a sub though. Pretty sure I made better mixes on that sony than my first pair of “pro” cans, $20 hd201.
Hd202 is prob way better.

At first I heard 0 difference between the source and the m40x, but now I hear a lil something.
M40x is still one of the closest to the source that they demo.
Doesn’t mean it’s the best.
If you’re a basshead like me, maybe you’d end up making better music with vmoda crossfades and a subpac.

I’d go with 8” monitors and a sub because it gets more clarity and control over the low end.

Straight out of the computer dac hmm… funny story
I ghetto rigged my monitors with 1/8" to rca, to 1/4" into the sub, then out of the sub into the monitors. It had a ground loop hum or something.

4 out interface solved it.
