Sun Nov 10, 2019 5:58 am

Interview with STBB Forever Beat Battle #654 winner, JoaGymshoe

The Winner

Can you shortly introduce yourself?

Joa:
Joachim
Rotterdam, the Netherlands
41 y/o
father of 1 son, 16 y/o
my girl lives in Cali.. for now.
work with orthotics and shoes etc.
I love sports, reading sci-fi and doing music obvs.
tryna stay off this mixed blessing called the internet.

Can you tell us about your musical or other inspiration.. acts/ producers whathaveyou?

Joa:
90's hiphop mostly
Redman, Biggie, Outkast, pharcyde, Jeru,
Pharoahe Monch etc etc.
Dilla, Madlib, Hi-Tek, ATCQ...
fellow stbb beatmakers i.e. LinkRust, Breakmaster Cylinder
drawing from House, Techno, R&B, Jungle, Trap..
anything dope I can get my ears on
Motown, Curtis Mayfield, Yes, Pink Floyd, 10CC,
Michael Jackson, Nirvana, The Doors..
there's just too much to mention.
will flip anything too.

How did you learn to make beats..and do you play any instruments?

Joa:
Started as soon as Reason 1 came out
I could finally make my own stuff at home to rap to.
recorded vocals and mixed tracks in Cubase.
had a dj buddy help me to get started as I'm quite a digibetic/technophobe.
it's been a long road but I'm also not super keen on watching tutorials and reading up on theory.

nope, played the clarinet for half a year but that's nothing
consider my voice as my instrument.. but been rapping since I was about 12
sing a lil' too occasionally.. took a few lessons.

What equipment or software (DAW, VST’s etc) and production process did you use on this track?

Joa:
Reason 4 > Cubase 5
Neumann mic.
M-Audio monitors
Byerdynamic closed and half open headphones
North Pole VST..love that one..use it a lot

How did you make use of the sample?

Joa :
Looped 4 bars I dug.
reversed the last part of bar 4 for an end part, leading in to the next 4 bars
cut a chop and played that in a sequencer to lay over that last part of 4
and then another different chop pattern for the last of 8.
took little parts of the loop and isolated/mixed them, and played dierent tones with them to make variations to the loop.
lotta filtering and some distortion.
stuff I can't find or so I make with my mouth and use fx to get that specific sound.. like that sweep at the start.

How did you go about the drumwork?

Joa:
made a kick snare pattern to go with the chops/loop in a sequencer.
then gave it some swing and variation by hand placing in grid
there were some cool drums too in the bob marley sample I chose, required by the rule.
threw in some wood hits here and there.
and some bells to go with the lyrics.
didn't need hats or cymbs as there were already enough in the chops.

Are there any interesting aspects about the track you’d like to share?

Joa:
I think I wrote the line
" F.I.T. for the J.O.B no D.O.U.B.T I am certainly"
and had never used it untill now,
waiting for the right moment.
..
the kick and snare ..and the bass synth note I used to play the melody with, came from ruedenz's STBB Monthly 010 pack :)/

Any recent projects/collabs going on?

Joa:
alwaaaaaaays lol.. both.

and I'm always busy working on the next STBB x WGW
Survival of the Freshest Compilation.
Vol. 3 about to drop in 3 weeks!
it's seriously dope fellas.. thanks to you!

working on an own album to be released on WGW label too.

anything else you'd like to say?

Joa:
Ah yes..
this place is the best.
my home on the internet.
made genuine friends
and learned a lot (of lessons).

onwards and upwards homies

love, peace, Joa
